“… In The Hidden History of the Korean War, 1950–51, [I. F.] Stone reported that South Korea had provoked North Korea to war by way of continual guerrilla attacks across the border (38th parallel) into the north of Korea. Thus goaded, the communists, eventually, would counterattack the south—and so provide the official casus belli (25 June 1950) required for Korean reunification. That such cross-border attacks, authorized by the South Korean government, were part of the U.S. foreign policy for the worldwide containment of communism, advocated by the politician John Foster Dulles, realized in the field by General Douglas MacArthur, U.S. commander in the Pacific Ocean military theatre, and countenanced by Syngman Rhee, the strongman President of South Korea…..”

Trump administration | Conflicting views on Russia

Donald Trump, US President: “The countries we are defending must pay for the cost of this defence – and, if not, the US must be prepared to let these countries defend themselves.” “If you get along and if Russia is really helping us, why would anybody have sanctions if somebody’s doing really great things?”

James Mattis, US Secretary of Defense: “Strengthening our alliances requires […] living up to our treaty obligations. When America gives its work it must mean what it says.” (confirmation hearing) “There are a decreasing number of areas where we can co-operate, and an increasing number of areas in which we will have to confront Russia. […] The most important thing is that we recognise the reality of what we deal with, with Mr Putin, and we recognise that he is trying to break the North Atlantic Alliance.”

Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State: “Russia today poses a danger […] It has invaded Ukraine […] and supported Syrian forces that brutally violate the laws of war. Our NATO allies are right to be alarmed at a resurgent Russia.” (confirmation hearing)

Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA: “[Russia] reasserted itself aggressively, invading and occupying Ukraine, threatening Europe, and doing nothing to aid in the destruction and defeat of ISIS.” (confirmation hearing)

“… Trump ran his candidacy like an Internet start-up.  His goal was to use Internet technology to disintermediate the established system (parties, media, etc.) of getting a President elected.  Bannon even brought into the team start-up culture mantras:

“move fast and break things”

“figure out what needs doing, and then just do it. Don’t wait for permission.”

I agree and I’ve been saying something similar for a year.

However, I have one important caveat. Unlike wildly successful Internet start-ups, Trump didn’t build a technological platform.  Instead, he ran an open source political insurgency using social networking…..”

Instant information.  Instant entertainment.  Instant communications.  Instant transactions.

Simply and rightly, we have come to expect our decisions to yield instant results from the systems that serve us.

Well, that’s true for every system except our political system.

We’re only allowed to interact with our political system, in a meaningful way, only once every two years and only then by filling out a multiple choice quiz in an election booth.

That’s akin to an Internet that only available for a couple of hours every two years at 1,200 baud.

How Police Departments Use Civil Forfeiture to Collect Billions

March 15th, 2017 by Kevin

Whenever you hear about tips to the police from confidential informants or “concerned citizens,” etc. keep this in mind: U.S. Communications Intelligence Secretly Shared with Law Enforcement for Use Against Americans in Criminal Investigations.

So, mass surveillance and civil forfeiture: Is there a link?

“It is the height of naivete to think that once collected this information won’t be used,” said a former Stazi former Stasi Lieutenant Colonel about the U.S. Government’s mass surveillance operations. The fact that the mechanism is in place is enough proof for me, and if you don’t want the pigs to rob you, I’d suggest that you treat your computer, mobile devices and the surveillance platforms from and Google and major CIA contractor Amazon with extreme caution.

“The tool used by the FBI to unlock an iPhone used by San Bernardino shooter, Syed Farook, will remain under wraps for now. On Monday, a court filing from FBI records management division section chief David Hardy said that the unveiling the method used to unlock the iPhone could “cause serious damage to national security.”

The biggest issue, Hardy’s filing said, is that releasing the details of the hacking tool could allow bad actors and hackers to understand the current methods being used by the FBI, and understand the weaknesses of those methods. As reported by ZDNet’s Zack Whittaker, the news comes as various news outlets are still fighting for information about the tool to be released…..”

When rumors started swirling after the election that Chelsea Clinton was considering her own foray into politics, it was met with eye rolls even from staunch supporters of the family.

“Think we can let the dust settle a bit before we start talking about another Clinton race?” one former adviser to Hillary Clinton said after the New York Post reported in November that the former first daughter was being “groomed” to run for Congress, possibly replacing 79-year-old congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) “It’s exhausting.”

But that skepticism is starting to fade.

Corpses

Assange Claims Hillary, Intel Officials “Quietly Pushing A Pence Takeover””.  Important, and quite plausible (not to mention cold-hearted and Machiavellian, considering the evil that Pence could do).  The Democrats have little ammunition against Trump, so if the corpse of Hillary still intends to be President it will have to be running against the unelectable Pence.

Wikileaks: Agenda Compromised Or Stronger Than Ever?”  Carefully phrased, but still clarifying in expressing the anger that the truth cost the corpse of Hillary the Presidency.

Speaking of no ammunition, the ‘leak’ of the Trump tax form proves that:

1Trump is a rich man running successful businesses (doubted in the Lügenpresse);

2he pays considerable taxes; and

3he uses a lot of tax planning, as he boasts, to obtain the best possible, but legal, rate of taxation.

In other words, the ‘leak’ was great for Trump.

Stephen E. Arnold: Big Data is Art Not Only Science

by Editor

Stephen E. Arnold

Big Data Requires More Than STEM Skills

It will require training Canada’s youth in design and the arts, as well as STEM subjects if that country is to excel in today’s big-data world. That is the advice of trio of academic researchers in that country, Patricio Davila, Sara Diamond, and Steve Szigeti,  who declare, “There’s No Big Data Without Intelligent Interface” at the Globe and Mail. The article begins by describing why data management is now a crucial part of success throughout society, then emphasizes that we need creative types to design intuitive user interfaces and effective analytics representations. The researchers explain:

Here’s the challenge: For humans, data are meaningless without curation, interpretation and representation. All the examples described above require elegant, meaningful and navigable sensory interfaces. Adjacent to the visual are emerging creative, applied and inclusive design practices in data “representation,” whether it’s data sculpture (such as 3-D printing, moulding and representation in all physical media of data), tangible computing (wearables or systems that manage data through tactile interfaces) or data sonification (yes, data can make beautiful music).

Infographics is the practice of displaying data, while data visualization or visual analytics refers to tools or systems that are interactive and allow users to upload their own data sets. In a world increasingly driven by data analysis, designers, digital media artists, and animators provide essential tools for users. These interpretive skills stand side by side with general literacy, numeracy, statistical analytics, computational skills and cognitive science.

“… As first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Clinton confidant and Virginia Gov. For the reporting period of October through November 2015, [FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe’s wife’s] campaign filings show she received $467,500 from Common Good VA, a political action committee controlled by McAuliffe, as well as an additional $292,500 from a second Democratic PAC.

Asked why the deputy director did not list his wife’s salary or the campaign contributions on the “Executive Branch Personnel Public Financial Disclosure Report” (OGE Form 278e) for 2015, an FBI spokesman said the forms were certified as “in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.” The spokesman added Office of Government Ethics regulations do not stipulate that a spouse’s salary or contributions received by a spouse’s political campaign must be declared. ….”

PENTAGON SEES RISE IN SEXUAL ASSAULT AT MILITARY ACADEMIES: Students at U.S. military academies experienced unwanted sexual contact last year at rates unseen since the 2011-12 academic year, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Pentagon.

The results, which were anonymous, were included in the Defense Department’s annual report on sexual harassment and violence at the academies.

The survey comes as the Pentagon deals with fallout from a nude-photo-sharing scandal rocking the Marine Corps. Many say the scandal is part of a larger issue in the armed forces, and the report underscores the difficulty the military faces in stamping out sexual assault and harassment.

“Cadets and midshipmen are our military’s future leaders,” Defense Secretary James Mattis said in a statement Wednesday about the report. “Our readiness in combat tomorrow will depend in large part on their experiences today. We must foster an environment that rejects sexual assault and sexual harassment, notably during these formative years at our service academies.”

‘Pretty Much Tastes Like Chicken’

March 15th, 2017 by Kevin

Via: MarketWatch:

A Bay Area food-technology startup says it has successfully developed the world’s first chicken strip grown from self-reproducing cells without so much as ruffling a feather.

And it pretty much tastes like chicken, according to people who were offered samples Tuesday in San Francisco, before a planned big reveal on Wednesday by Memphis Meats Inc.

Scientists, startups and animal-welfare activists believe the new product could help to revolutionize the roughly $200 billion U.S. meat industry. Their goal: Replace billions of cattle, hogs and chickens with animal meat they say can be grown more efficiently and humanely in stainless steel bioreactor tanks.

Startups including Memphis Meats and Mosa Meat, based in the Netherlands, have been pursuing the concept. They call it “clean meat,” a spin on “clean energy,” and they argue the technique would help the food industry avoid the costs of grain, water and waste-disposal associated with livestock. Scientists from those companies have already produced beef, grown from bovine cells and made into a burger and a meatball. Until now, chicken hasn’t been produced using the method.
