[Ed.: The US sent a ship named after Admiral of the Navy George Dewey, hero of the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War, not the fellow who was a well-known public intellectual, a major voice of progressive education and liberalism, a major educational reformer, one of the founders of The New School, a founding member of the A.P.A., served as the A.P.A.’s eighth President in 1899, and was the author of an 1896 article on the reflex arc which is now considered a basis of American functional psychology, founder of the University of Chicago laboratory school, who wrote of a public journalism that seeks to orient communication away from elite, corporate hegemony toward a civic public sphere. “The ‘public’ of public journalists is Dewey’s public.” In 1950, Dewey, Bertrand Russell, Benedetto Croce, Karl Jaspers, and Jacques Maritain agreed to act as honorary chairmen of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, a false-front anti-communist advocacy group founded that year and funded by the CIA. According to Antony Sutton, Dewey evidences influence by the Illuminatist Skiull and Bones in his “outrageous Hegelianism”.]

President Emmanuel Macron will ask France’s parliament to extend a state of emergency, in place since the 2015 attacks by Islamic State (IS) group militants, following this Monday’s suicide bombing in Manchester.
France’s new president said in a statement that he will ask lawmakers to prolong the measure from July 15, its current expiration date, until November 1. It would be the sixth extension of the state of emergency, which gives police exceptional powers.

Brazil’s president ordered soldiers to restore order in the country’s capital Wednesday after some government ministries were evacuated during clashes between police and protesters who are seeking the leader’s ouster.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched to Congress to protest economic reforms that President Michel Temer is pushing through and to demand he step down amid a corruption scandal.
Scuffles between police and protesters who tried to jump a cordon mushroomed into a series of clashes in which officers fired tear gas and pepper spray to contain the crowd. Protesters set fires and used portable toilets as barricades.

A classic example of creative reframing occurred during one of the many riots in Paris during the politically turbulent nineteenth century when the commander of an army detachment was ordered to clear a city square by firing at the canaille –the rabble. He commanded his soldiers to take up the firing positions, their rifles leveled at the crowd and, when a ghastly silence descended, he drew his sword and shouted at the top of his lungs:
“Mesdames et messieurs! I have orders to fire at the canaille…
But, since all I can see from here are a great number of honest, respectable citizens peacefully going about their lawful business, may I request that theyclear the square quietly so that I can safely pick out and shoot the wretched canaille…”
The square emptied in a few minutes, with no loss either of life or face.

“The Iraqi government has officially confirmed a cooperation with Syria, Iran and Russia to secure the Syrian-Iraqi border. Well, pilgrims, this is some really bad news for the “US led coalition.”
1. The US has struggled since the invasion and occupation of Iraq to make the country a reliable ally in its wars against regional actors in the ME. One can debate endlessly what the causes were for these wars. The “oilies” and other economic determinists have their explanation. The Zionist conspiracy fans have theirs. The “demonic forces” people (me) have ours. The MIC crowd have theirs. But, no matter what your explanation the reality of the long military COIN, financial and political struggle cannot be seriously doubted. If you think it was somehow not a real struggle look at the pictures of men with metal, robotic looking legs in the ads for various wounded veterans’ aid groups.
2. The present government of the US along with its European allies is now continuing to struggle to help its painfully clumsy Iraqi government ally to capture Mosul against rather small but incredible determined Sunni Muslim fanatics who, in the main, would rather be dead than live in the Western mindset of the 21st Century.
3. A while back Mattis and Kushner went to Baghdad to see Al-Abadi, the “moderate” Shia Arab prime minister. One must imagine that at least part of the message was an exhortation to “get your act together.” And a few days ago the Iraqi Shia population was treated to the spectacle of President Trump not only being “appointed” mukhtar in America but then his further denunciation of Iran the foremost Shia power center. The Sunni princeling lounging in a chair behind Trump watched him IMO as a cat watches a bird. One can only imagine the conversation among the potentates and dictators in that room after the mukhtar had finished his obeisance.
4. Iraq, Russia, Syria and Iran are now proclaimed to be allies by the Iraqi Interior Minister (police and police troops)The US with its encrusted neocon, ziocon and R2P Borg blew the last 15 years in the Islamic World and we are obviously invincibly ignorant and determined to remain so.

“… Let us be clear about the possibility that UK intelligence (MI-5, MI-6 and the military) or police intelligence will stop cooperating with the US IC. The possibility is ZERO. I know as much as anyone of the nature of the relationships of the US IC and its allies as anyone. The US contribution to all of these is somewhere between 80% and 95%. These folks have very little real collection and analytic capabilities. We give them everything and they cannot give us much of anything because they have nothing. There are exceptions. The US IC and the British “old boys club” are welded at the hip. Our thing grew from their thing in WW2. Before that our war plans were based on the idea of the British Empire as the enemy. The US IC and that of the UK are virtually the same thing in the SIGINT field and James Bond fantasies aside, no one has trusted MI-6 since Philby. Israel/US intelligence relations are overwhelmingly conducted on the basis of the Israeli attitude of “what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine as well.” The French have excellent HUMINT in their former empire but aside from their excellent soldierly qualities the rest is not much. All the rest of US intel liaison relationships across the world is mostly a matter of diplomacy….”

Will President Trump Make Rust-Belt Manufacturing Great Again? Dean Baker, CEPR

Trump Saudi investment plan could see Saudi ownership of rust belt airports. What could go wrong?
New Cold War
“West Wing officials are prepping for a years-long war with investigators and the bureaucracy, with plans to beef up legal, surrogate, communications and rapid-response teams as part of a ‘new normal’ for President Trump — besieged” [Axios]. “Trump aides recognize that besides being in the crosshairs of investigators on Russia, they will be the continuing target of leaks from the bureaucracy. The Trump ally referred to this second enemy as ‘nameless, faceless, deep-state types’ who have been inflamed and are punching back through the media…. Aides recognize they should have built more push-back capacity from the beginning. But the weakness reflects the minimalist transition planning and thin staffing that have beset the whole Trump machine…. [T]he success of that plan depends partly on President Trump’s willingness to compartmentalize. Close aides have trouble imagining that.”
“CBO and JCT expect that, as a consequence, the waivers in those states would have another effect: Community-rated premiums would rise over time, and people who are less healthy (including those with preexisting or newly acquired medical conditions) would ultimately be unable to purchase comprehensive nongroup health insurance at premiums comparable to those under current law, if they could purchase it at all — despite the additional funding that would be available under HR 1628 to help reduce premiums” [CBO]. And: “Over time, it would become more difficult for less healthy people (including people with preexisting medical conditions) in those states to purchase insurance because their premiums would continue to increase rapidly. As a result of the narrower scope of covered benefits and the difficulty less healthy people would face purchasing insurance, average premiums for people who did purchase insurance would generally be lower than in other states—but the variation around that average would be very large. CBO and JCT do not have an estimate of how much lower those premiums would be.” Some people go to HappyVille, and some (more than now) go to Pain City. The way out isn’t tinkering with another Republican plan, ObamaCare being a Republican plan, but making health care a universal and direct benefit.
“Gov. Dannel P. Malloy delivered a public rebuke Wednesday evening to the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate, accusing them of misrepresenting his insurance commissioner’s position on a consumer-protection bill and taking an “unnecessarily antagonistic approach toward Connecticut’s insurance industry” [The Connecticut Mirror]. “Malloy’s office sent the letter to reporters after the passage of a bill, SB 445, that would outlaw ‘gag clauses’ in pharmacy benefit manager contracts that now bar pharmacists from sharing price information with customers . The provisions keep pharmacists from telling customers when they could save money by paying cash for a generic instead of a $20 co-pay.” Dear Lord.
“More than one-fourth of all Medicare beneficiaries—15 million people—spend 20 percent or more of their incomes on premiums plus medical care, including cost-sharing and uncovered services. Beneficiaries with incomes below 200 percent of the poverty level (just under $24,000 for a single person) and those with multiple chronic conditions or functional limitations are at significant financial risk. Overall, beneficiaries spent an average of $3,024 per year on out-of-pocket costs. Financial burdens and access gaps highlight the need to approach reform with caution. Already-high burdens suggest restructuring cost-sharing to ensure affordability and to provide relief for low-income beneficiaries” [Commonwealth Fund]. Medicare has a neoliberal infestation and needs to be fixed too.
“Electronic health records are viewed by many as the holy grail of modern health care – a centralized record of a persons medical history, medications, procedures, and other clinical data. If patients have multiple doctors and specialists, or complex conditions, an E-Health record can ensure continuity of care, appropriate prescribing and fewer errors of care. In a medical emergency, relevant health information can be accessed quickly” [UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine]. “[The risk of hacking] has been recognized in the area of connected digital technologies such as pacemakers and insulin pumps. Former US Vice President Dick Cheney had his pacemaker wireless function disabled to mitigate the risk of hacking. Hacking of health records opens up other potential harms to individuals such as medication security, hospital and health system security and enabling of targeted medical murder. This is a concept that is not within our discourse or awareness, but is certainly technologically possible.”
“Kleptocrats should face the International Criminal Court ” [The FCPA Blog]. “The arguments for prosecuting grand corruption at the International Criminal Court as a crime against humanity are persuasive…. Perhaps one of the most important advantages is the principle of complementarity, where the International Criminal Court or ICC can accept jurisdiction if a State is unwilling or unable to investigate or prosecute a case, or if cases are not being conducted “genuinely,” thus ensuring impunity does not prevail, a consistent theme in cases of grand corruption… In my view, grand corruption is a crime that is of the most serious concern to the international community. When State funds are diverted into the pockets of kleptocrats, the result is often disruptions to schools, hospitals, housing, water and food supplies, and other civil services. Those disruptions are therefore a direct cause of violations of liberty, dignity, civil and political rights, the right to family life, education, health care, and so on.”
The Moustache of Understanding takes on the Rust Belt: “It turns out that it’s not that hard to train someone, even with just a high school or community college degree, to operate an advanced machine tool or basic computer. ‘Factory managers would say, ‘I will train them and put them to work tomorrow in good jobs’ requiring hard skills,’ said [Ron Woody, county executive for Roane County, Tennessee]. ‘The problem they have is finding people with the right soft skills.’ … What are those soft skills? I asked. ‘Employers just want someone who will get up, dress up, show up, shut up and never give up,’ Woody responded without hesitation. And there are fewer workers with those soft skills than you might think, he added…. Soft skills also include the willingness to be a lifelong learner, because jobs are changing so quickly.” And: “It’s actually Bill Clinton’s America.”

DARPA announced today that it has selected Boeing to design and build a new reusable, hypersonic spaceplane called the Phantom Express that would fly into high suborbital altitudes to launch satellites into orbit before coming back down to land horizontally like an airplane.
The unmanned craft, part of the Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) program, would release a small expendable upper stage rocket after it reaches suborbital altitudes. The upper stage would continue to carry the payload to orbit while the first stage—the spaceplane itself—would bank and return to Earth to land on a runway. DARPA hopes the XS-1 will allow the Department of Defense to launch satellites into low Earth orbit with only a few days’ notice, compared to the months it currently takes to plan satellite launches, and that the spaceplane will be capable of landing and relaunching within hours.

The plans signal how seriously some tech companies are taking the seemingly strange idea of saving videos, photos, or valuable documents in the same molecule our genes are made of. The reason, says Victor Zhirnov, chief scientist of the Semiconductor Research Corporation, is that efforts to shrink computer memory are hitting physical limits, but DNA can store data at incredible densities.
Formatted in DNA, every movie ever made would fit inside a volume smaller than a sugar cube.
“DNA is the densest known storage medium in the universe, just based on the laws of physics. That is the reason why people are looking into this,” says Zhirnov. “And the problem we are solving is the exponential growth of stored information.”

““Secret” Russian Document Influenced Comey’s Probe Into Hillary Clinton: Report”. The striking thing about this story is that it seems of vital importance to determine if the email in the document is legitimate, but the FBI, who could determine the issue easily, seems frozen, unable to act, just as they have relied on the ultra-hinky CrowdStrike and never examined the actual DNC servers. The irony appears to be lost on everybody that it is the FBI’s incompetent handling of pilfered – Comey can’t answer the questions about the origins of the document as it would reveal how the FBI stole Russian documents! – Russian intelligence that led to the problem. Just how brilliant would that sneaky Putin have to be to know just what kind of email to manufacture AND allow to fall into the hands of the FBI that would, unchallenged as it made so much sense (given the outrageous Lynch tarmac meeting with Bill, the email rings true), influence Comey to throw the election to Trump?

What is going on in Europe is several orders of magnitude worse than mere ‘blowback’. Angry young men and women in Europe are being groomed and trained by Wahabbist preachers and their Western government IC allies to go and fight as soldiers in the proxy armies fighting civilization in the Middle East. Appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate the murder of Seth Rich, the alleged Wikileaks email leaker
Created by J.F. on May 19, 2017
On July 10, 2016, Seth Rich was shot twice in the early morning as he walked back to his house in Washington D.C. Immediately after the crime, the death was called an armed robbery… but none of Seth Rich’s belongings were taken from him.
Rod Wheeler, a private investigator hired by the family, said that there was evidence Seth Rich had contacted WikiLeaks and that law enforcement were covering this up. MSM is not covering this murder, instead pushing it to the side, so it is now up to us.
The facts do not add up, law enforcement stopped covering the crime, and now it is time for us to fight for justice. Seth Rich deserves this.
“… Keep talking about Seth Rich. The reason the American deep state (which the corporate media is generally considered part of) wants you to shut up about Seth Rich is because it is devastating to the Russiagate narrative they’ve been pumping all their energy into since the November election. Trump has been painted into a corner by America’s unelected power establishment where he has to take a strong stance against Russia or it’ll be politically disastrous for him; even taking Obama’s position on Russian affairs is now unacceptable to everyone riding the Russiagate train. By applying this pressure America’s oligarchs can force Trump into pushing toward the Syria regime change they’ve been salivating over for decades and strangling Russia with sanctions to hurt Putin’s popularity so they can depose him…..
This goal is an open and established fact, by the way. One of the most aggressive promulgators of the Russiagate narrative in Washington, Rep. Eric Swalwell, told Fox’s Tucker Carlson in March that the plan to punish Russia for the unproven hacking offense is to “squeeze their economy” with “tougher sanctions” to the point that it “cuts off Russia from the rest of the world” in order to “hurt [Putin’s] popularity”. And this is exactly what is happening; Russia has already had to slash its military budget by 25 percent in order to stay afloat under the weight of the crushing sanctions. And you’re still supposed to be terrified of Putin.
The American oligarchy wants Putin gone because he pushes back against US attempts to dominate that part of the world. The Crimean peninsula is a crucial strategic location, and at the request of the Crimean people Russia annexed it from America’s puppet regime in Ukraine. Syria, longtime ally of Russia, happens to occupy a crucial location in the fossil fuel battles, and instead of bowing to Washington’s hunger for regime change Putin is helping Assad kill the terrorist factions that America has been arming and training to destabilize the nation. Finally, Moscow and Beijing have been collaborating to undermine the hegemony of the US dollar in that region, which, since power only exists in the relative absence of power for everyone else, threatens the dominance of the US oligarchs.
The oligarchs want to prevent that, and so they need you to shut up about Seth Rich. That’s why they’re pumping out a nonstop “shut up about Seth Rich” campaign in the CIA trade rag Washington Post, that’s why they’re pressuring Fox News to back away from the story, that’s why Reddit is saturated in coordinated upvote and downvote brigades on the subject, and that’s why all your brainwashed liberal friends keep telling you that you’re not allowed to talk about this thing. We’ve got to keep talking about it though. Our lives may literally depend on it.”

Adam Alter is an associate professor at New York University. His new book Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked is a light review of what Alter calls “behavioral addiction.” He describes as follows:
“People have been addicted to substances for thousands of years, but for the past two decades, we’ve also been hooked on technologies, like Instagram, Netflix, Facebook, Fitbit, Twitter, and email—platforms we’ve adopted because we assume they’ll make our lives better. These inventions have profound upsides, but their appeal isn’t an accident. Technology companies and marketers have teams of engineers and researchers devoted to keeping us engaged. They know how to push our buttons, and how to coax us into using their products for hours, days, and weeks on end.”
The book includes a rich inventory of examples – particularly in the gaming area. If you want a book to help you understand some of the reasons why you want to put yourself and your family on a device diet, here it is. Alter does not lead you through some of the darker and more dangerous aspects – but what he describes will be sufficient to persuade you of the importance of understanding the pros and cons of the technology you use.

Peace through mutual blackmail: is that what’s happening in Washington?
by Jon Rappoport
May 25, 2017
In the last few days, the campaign to impeach Donald Trump has quieted down. We’ll see what happens; but is this breathing space and pause the result of a stalemate? Do both sides have “control files” on each other? Is the underlying proposition, “I won’t spill your secrets if you won’t spill mine”?
I now refer to an article about Trump and his enemies that has been circulating online. I don’t know who the author is.
His views and opinions make an interesting circumstantial case. Here is an excerpt:
“James Comey is a poisonous snake of the highest order… a deep-water Swamp Denizen who has been highly paid to deliberately provide cover for high-level corruption by the Clintons and Obama. He is has been central to trying to destroy the Trump campaign and then the Trump administration from the start. He is as dirty as they come in DC. He had highest-level cover (the FBI no less) and was deep into an effort to eliminate Trump. Trump had to move hard, fast, and at exactly the right time to cut the head off the snake without getting bitten by the snake or being finished by the other swamp denizens.”
“Begin by noticing how the President fired Comey when Comey was 3,000 miles away from his office, that Comey had no inkling he was being cut, that all his files, computers, and everything in his office were seized by his boss Sessions and the justice department. This was not a violation of protocol, it was tactical. Notice how Prez Trump compartmentalized the strike and did not inform any of his White House ‘staff’ to prevent leaks. Notice how he emasculated Comey and the swamp denizens by letting them know in a tweet that the Attorney General got information (surveillance ‘tapes’ from the seizure of Comey’s office) to let Comey and his handlers know that Trump’s DOJ has the goods on them. This was a brilliant, strategic and totally imperative move at exactly the right time against horrible, evil and corrupt powers infesting our government.”
“The swamp is on notice that the President is on to them, they are sweating bullets because their criminal games of corruption are being pursued and they know it. They are screaming and ranting because they are desperate denizens of the swamp who are beginning to realize they are roadkill.”
The article goes on to describe the purported depths of Comey’s corrupt connections to the Clintons and the Clinton Foundation, as their agent.
In the author’s view, Trump and Attorney General Sessions have the goods on the Clintons now, and also have damning evidence of crimes committed by other key players in the DC swamp.
There is another possibility.
Given Donald Trump’s history as a real estate hustler from way back, his acrobatic financial dealings with money men, his projects’ bankruptcies, his celebrity status, his impulsive proclivities, his extraordinary self-promotion, it’s obvious his enemies have compiled a “control file” on him. They have the sort of information they believe they can use as serious blackmail.
In that case, we could now be looking at a stalemate of sorts. Both sides have the goods on each other.
This is no guarantee of a permanent peace based on Mutually Assured Destruction; but MAD could form the basis of a truce. And the truce could extend into the future.
“I have your secrets, you have mine. Now let’s do business.”
Of course, we have to remember that Washington is a tinderbox at all times. It’s a dry forest waiting for a match to be struck and a spark to fly.
We will see whether Trump drains the swamp, the swamp drains him, or nobody drains anybody.
The present war in Washington isn’t for the faint of heart, or the nice people who want everybody to get along, or the suburbanites who want all participants to be awarded trophies. Washington is Crime Central and the knives are out in full view. It’s a fashion parade in the devil’s cave. To paraphrase Harry Truman, if you can’t stand the overflowing toilets, get out of the bathroom.
Washington is a land of insanity, psychosis, spying, panic, and excrement-throwing.
When you try to connect the dots, you see they have blood and lies and hatred and coup-plotting and impeachment and even the ghost of David Rockefeller embedded in them, as opening and closing little clams and sharks and crawling worms and blobs of unidentifiable species try to take Donald Trump down. And he, of course, wants to take them down…
It would be no surprise if the people who hold each other’s secrets are staring at a “nuclear freeze” pact on the bargaining table: “you can’t blow me up without me blowing you up.”
Also consider players within the US intelligence community. Both the CIA and NSA have been spying on officials in Washington and other prominent Americans for a long time. These agencies hold secrets as well.
And then there is the organization whose members and alumni Trump has surrounded himself with:
Goldman Sachs. Through his key appointees from the “vampire squid” firm, Trump is working an audacious angle.
He knows that if the stock market takes a long and horrendous dive, the pressure on him is going to be enormous. The “business community” will blame him. The media will claim the economy is collapsing under his watch. Goldman can make many moves to keep the stock market up. What does the firm want in return? That’s the magic question. Threats of war, and war, in order to keep contract money flowing to the military industrial complex? Special and undetectable favors? Protection from prosecution for ongoing financial crimes? And what does Goldman Sachs know about Trump? What would they be willing to reveal, if he backs away from any part of the agreement he has struck with them?
The mutually assured destruction pact has more than two sides. Holding together a multi-faceted truce isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Everyone involved has something to gain and something to lose. Calculating upside vs. downside is a delicate proposition.
And, in the midst of this, crazy people can show up who go off on the spur of the moment. They blow their corks, and all bets are off.
For now, cooler heads are prevailing.
Blackmail, extortion. It’s not the only game in town, but it’s the big one. It lurks around every corner, it sits in every conference room, it weaves its way through legislation, policy, and judicial decision.
It’s the other branch of government.
